Malapascua Island has been making rounds in the internet for its beautiful beaches and the grandeur of its reefs. This island is home to one of the most endangered species of sharks, the Thresher Sharks. Dubbed to be “loneliest” shark, (blame it on the appearance of their jaw lines and lips, it looks like they are frowning all the time!) this amazing creature can be found lurking within the depths of Monad Shoal.
Divers from all over the world arrive daily to Malapascua island, since this is the only place in the globe where the Thresher Sharks can be spotted almost on a daily basis. It does include some early wake up since in order to see these majestic animals you’ll have to be in the water by sunrise!
Apart from Thresher shark sightings, there are also sighting of other magnificent sea creatures such as manta rays, hammerhead sharks, devil rays and eagle rays.
This diving paradise is also very well known for incredible macro at all its dive sites. You can see many types of shrimps and crabs, including harlequin shrimp, ghost shrimp and xeno crabs. Pipefish are all around including several types of ghost pipefish.
Malapascua Island is just about 2,5km long and 1km wide at its’ widest point and it is home to just about 5000 inhabitants, with around 1400 of them being children. This island is the perfect place to explore around wandering through its’ sand-paths while discovering all its’ secrets.
It owes it name to the Spanish discoverer Magallanes who was stranded on this island on 25th December 1520. His vessel got stuck in the coral reef surrounding the island and he and his crew spent all Christmas trying to set his vessel free. This was no easy task and Magallanes had a really hard time here, he therefore decided to call the island “Mala Pascua”, which means “Bad Christmas” in Spanish.
Mix with the friendly locals while exploring the villages, partake on a feast of great food in the many excellent restaurants that are scattered on the island, enjoy one of the many secluded beaches which you’ll most likely have for yourself, or chill on Bounty Beach every evening during Happy Hour and meet new people from all around the world while enjoying the unique island vibe this little piece of paradise has to offer.
This amazing island offers an experience found nowhere else in the world, unique, inviting, and fresh which you will never forget.
Take a dive into this magical place and find treasures beholden to the well-traveled soul and youthful spirit alike.
